15 Years Abroad

15 years ago, I left Singapore to study in France, and I’ve learned so much since. Now, having lived in Paris, Brussels, and Hong Kong, I reflect on my journey and ponder the future.

Exactly 15 years ago, I left Singapore to embark on a new adventure, to live abroad for the first time. I was going to stay in France for one year on my student visa, with no plans beyond that. Some asked why I would give up a budding career, a typical Singaporean concern! But I believed, and still do believe, there’s much more to life than just work.

Fifteen years — much can transpire in 782 weeks. The first 15 years of life were a formative journey, transforming from a helpless infant to a curious child, and then to an awkward teenager with a memorable bad haircut. The next 15 were marked by new experiences: falling in love and experiencing heartbreak, travelling the world and creating awe-inspiring memories, and navigating imposter syndrome in uncomfortable black pumps and suits for work.

In this latest chapter, I had begun my journey in France — a land of four seasons, where the passage of time felt more pronounced than in Singapore. I’ve moved through three different cities: Paris, Brussels, and Hong Kong. Along the way, I’ve developed a deeper appreciation for kindness in a world that can sometimes be harsh.

As I reach this 15-year milestone, I stand on the brink of yet another transition. What lies ahead?

And all the lives we ever lived and all the lives to be
Are full of trees and changing leaves.
